The Final Hurrah

What a magical three months. Uluwatu lived up to its reputation for being an amazing place to surf, get fit and eat awesome food.

I honestly can't believe the 3 months is done. It feels like a dream. It feels weird being back in my own home in Melbourne.

Some general thoughts on Indonesia/Bali:

  • The service quality is absolutely the best in the world, every restaurant or venue you go to the people are friendly, professional and make sure you have an amazing experience
  • Finding a cheap/safe (from a food preparation perspective) Indonesian food venue is absolutely critical for the experience, we had an awesome place where we had lots of lunches and dinners for the month whilst we were in Balangan, but we lacked this kind of venue in Canggu
  • The ocean water is like a bath, I don't think there's any better place in the world to truely lock in to surfing and really get better at it, it's just sad when it rains and there's lots of trash floating in the water
  • The dogs, chickens and cows roaming free in Balangan were so cute, it's such a peaceful place compared to somewhere more built up like Canggu
  • I love riding scooters, I've said it a few times on the blog but it just feels so nice to have wind blowing in your face as you travel around
  • I've never seen a higher concentration of really fit people than what I saw at Bambu Fitness
  • Groceries in Bali were incredibly expensive which we didn't really expect, we went to Bintang, Pepito and Nirmala and it was always super expensive to do a normal shop like we would in Melbourne, this really encouraged us to eat out more which worked out to be cheaper than actually cooking at home for the most part
  • The weather can be absolutely perfect in November even though it's close to the rainy season
  • The start time for work really did work well (7AM) as I had so much spare time in the afternoon to do things, even more time given that we didn't need to cook or do chores

REVL#revltraining.com

When I pick a new Melbourne gym I might go with REVL. It seems like a solid option and good locations for me.

Beatles Anthology#disneyplus.com

Another fantastic piece of Beatles content. It's not new but the remaster looks lovely. Was a great watch to pass time on the plane.

The Browser Has Everything You Need#jovidecroock.com

I've seen this pattern repeat itself countless times: teams build a SPA, struggle with initial load performance, then swing completely to SSR with progressive enhancement. They throw out the SPA architecture because they think it's fundamentally at odds with performance. But the real issue isn't the architecture—it's that we're not leveraging what the browser already gives us.

When you server-render HTML, the browser starts parsing it immediately. During that parse, it discovers resources it needs: stylesheets, scripts, images. The browser is already doing parallel loading—that's its default behavior. The problem is we're not telling it about our data dependencies early enough.

The fetch call in your JavaScript might complete instantly because the response is already cached. You get the benefits of SSR (fast HTML delivery, progressive enhancement) with the benefits of a SPA (fast client-side hydration).

Some really nice clear explanation of why using <link rel="preload"> is so useful.

AI Clocks#clocks.brianmoore.com

Funny little "make fun of AI" site.

Bizarre Ashes#youtube.com

This has to go down as one of the weirdest Test matches of all time. I honestly don't know what to make of it going in to the Brisbane night test. England's bowlers are good but their batters are trash? Maybe? Australia are also really bad at batting apart from Travis Head?

Test, Odi, T20,IPL,Pressure match,ICC Finals...Travis Head is absolutely beast!!!

Zed So Far

I've used Zed for around a month now as my sole text editor and I'm enjoying it.

I like its speed and simplicity. The team is actively rolling out updates and it's super simple to just setup and start coding.

There's two things I currently miss from VSCode (one of which I think is getting fixed soon):

  • Pretty TypeScript Errors is one of the best extensions in the VSCode marketplace, I think this kind of TypeScript error view will soon be natively supported in Zed and it seems like it'll be in the next stable release
  • Jest Runner is such a convenient way to run tests, I hate having to memorise the command line args for jest and prefer to have my tests run directly in my editor so I don't need to switch windows

Jake Malone In Bali

Was awesome having my brother come visit us in Bali this week. We did a lot of surfing. Was really nice to feel a bit more confident on the board and be out there in some bigger waves. I still suck at surfing but its definitely lit a bit of a fire in me to have more of a crack at it when we get home.

My current problem is that I get too stiff with my upper body when I stand up on the board. I need to stay low and put more pressure on my front foot when I stand. That will help me wipe out less as I was often falling off the back.

My new favourite spot to surf in the world is Balangan Beach.
